Hello, my name is Selena Helms and I am a graduate from Purdue University's Interior Design program. I also hold a minor from Purdue University in art history. I am extremely passionate about making design accessible to everyone. Too many spaces have been designed without people who may have disabilities in mind. It is important that in the future we are designing interior spaces for the most extreme cases and making them inclusive for all. I don’t want to create spaces where those that can’t get around as easily are an afterthought, I want them to be included from the beginning. I also can't help but notice that there are very few interior designers who are minorities. As a queer Black woman, it can make it hard for me to have someone to look up to because nobody looks like or represents me. I want to be able to be a role model for others from similar backgrounds as me and show them that they can succeed too. It can be discouraging wanting to succeed in a field where nobody looks like you because it can make you think that it isn't something you're supposed to be doing. I hope to take that feeling away from others who look like me.
